What Verification Changes on a Contact
Every field a verification job or an opt-out writes to, and what it is left at
Verification is mostly a read operation that records what it found. There are two exceptions where it changes something you would act on — a phone number's format, and SMS suppression for a landline — and both are listed below.
The table applies to every route: a bulk job, a selection, a single contact checked from its own page, and a contact checked as it is created. All four write the same fields, and the contact records which route produced the answer.
Opting contacts out from the review list is a separate action with its own set of fields.
What a verification job writes
| Field | When | Set to |
|---|---|---|
| Verification notes | Every contact that got an answer | The provider's answer for that channel, alongside anything already recorded for the other channel |
| Email verified / Phone verified flag | Every contact that got an answer | Set when the answer was positive, cleared when it was negative |
| Primary phone | A phone number verified as valid in a different format | Its canonical international form. The original is kept in the verification notes |
| SMS opt-out | A carrier identified the number as a landline | Set. Never cleared by verification |
| Do-not-call | Never by a verification job | Untouched |
| Auto-engage | Never by a verification job | Untouched |
| Consent fields | Never | Untouched. They record how consent was obtained, which a verification result has nothing to say about |
Info: A contact that could not be answered for gets a record of the non-answer and nothing else. Its verified flag is left exactly as it was, because a non-answer is not evidence in either direction.
What the opt-out in the review list writes
| Action | Fields set |
|---|---|
| Opt out of email | Email opt-out |
| Opt out of SMS & calls | SMS opt-out, and do-not-call |
| Also turn off auto-engage, with either of the above | Auto-engage cleared, counted and reported separately |
Warning: The phone opt-out sets do-not-call as well as the SMS opt-out, so it stops calls, not just texts. The button says Opt out of SMS & calls for that reason. If you want to stop only the texting, clear the SMS opt-out field directly on the contact instead.
What reads these fields afterwards
| Field | Effect once set |
|---|---|
| Email verified | Email sending skips its own pre-send check on this address. An unverified or rejected address is checked on every send, and a rejected one fails that check and is reported as an invalid recipient |
| Email opt-out | No automated email is sent to this contact |
| SMS opt-out | Single SMS sends refuse the contact, and SMS broadcasts exclude them |
| Do-not-call | Calling treats the contact as not to be called |
| Auto-engage | When cleared, automated engagement ignores the contact entirely, on every channel |
| Verification notes | Drives the badges on Manage Contacts and every count in the verification banner |
