Background Imagery
Optional images that sit behind sections, placed where they suit.
Step 7 is Backdrops, and it is genuinely optional — the button says Skip & Complete if you upload nothing.
Backdrops are images that can sit behind a section rather than inside it: the photograph behind a hero, the texture behind a call to action. Give Webby a few and it decides which sections they suit as it builds your pages.
Steps
Upload a few images
Drop images onto the upload area or click to choose them.
What works as a backdrop is different from what works as a picture. Backdrops have text on top of them, so the useful ones are calm: open skies, textures, a workspace shot with empty space in it. A busy image with a face in the middle makes a poor backdrop however good a photograph it is.
Let them be analysed
Uploaded images are examined so Webby can place them sensibly — which are light and which are dark, where the empty space is, what they are of.
This is what lets it put a dark-text section over a pale image rather than the other way round.
Skip, or complete
If you have uploaded nothing the button reads Skip & Complete; if you have, it reads Complete Setup. Either finishes the wizard and takes you to My Sites.
You can add backdrops later in Site Settings > Backdrops, which is the better plan if you do not have good images to hand right now.
Tip: Three or four strong backdrops beat a dozen mediocre ones. Webby reuses them across sections, and a weak image will turn up more than once.
Result
Setup is complete. The site appears on My Sites with a staging address, and you are ready to build pages.
