How Resource Scope Works

Who each resource is for, and how SI ranks what fits.

What It Is

Scope is the answer to "who is this for?", recorded in two dimensions.

Product Scope ties a resource to one or more of your offerings. Audience Scope ties it to one or more audience segments. Each can be left as All, which means the resource is eligible for everyone.

Scope is not a label. It is the filter SI applies before it chooses anything.

Why It Matters

Without scope, every resource competes for every message, and the only thing separating them is how well you described each one.

With scope, the list SI sees for a given contact is already the right list. A case study written for one segment does not get offered to another. Material about an offering the contact has never discussed stays out of the way.

The audience dimension is the stricter of the two, and the more useful for that reason.

How It Works

When SI prepares a message, it works out which audience segment the contact belongs to and which of your offerings are in play. Then it sorts your resources into four bands and takes the strongest matches, up to ten resources for any one message:

  1. Matches both the contact's audience and a product in play
  2. Matches the audience
  3. Matches a product
  4. Brand-wide — scoped to All on both dimensions

Audience scope also excludes. A resource scoped to a segment the contact is not in is removed from consideration entirely, rather than ranked last.

If SI has not yet worked out which segment a contact belongs to, audience-scoped resources are not thrown away — they are ranked below everything else, so they can still be used when nothing better fits.

Examples

Scenario
A brand-wide explainer video

All products, all audiences. Eligible for everyone, and picked when nothing more specific applies.

Scenario
A case study for one segment

Audience Scope set to that segment. It will be offered to contacts in that segment and withheld from the others — which is usually the point of writing it.

Scenario
A spec sheet for one offering

Product Scope set to that offering, audiences left on All. It surfaces whenever that offering is being discussed, whoever is asking.

Scenario
Both set

The strongest match there is. This is the resource that wins when the contact is in that segment and that offering is in play.

Warning: Scoping to an audience is a decision to withhold as well as to target. If you want a resource to be preferred for one segment but still available to others, leave Audience Scope on All and say who it suits in the LLM description instead.
