Subscriptions in Edge

Recurring billing with automatic payment collection

Subscriptions let you charge customers automatically on a recurring schedule. You create a plan with billable items and a billing interval, add subscribers, and Edge handles payment collection each cycle.

If a payment fails, the dunning system retries automatically before canceling.

Capabilities

Subscription Plans

Bundle recurring billable items into a named plan with a billing interval — weekly, monthly, or yearly.

Automatic Payment Collection

Edge charges the subscriber's stored payment method automatically each billing cycle. No manual intervention needed.

Dunning and Retry

When a payment fails, Edge retries according to your dunning schedule. After exhausting retries, a grace period applies before cancellation.

Lifecycle Management

Pause, resume, cancel, or upgrade subscriptions at any time. Changes can take effect immediately or at end of the current period.

Key Concepts

Subscription Plan

A named bundle of recurring billable items with a set billing interval (weekly, monthly, yearly).

Billing Cycle

The recurring period between charges. Each cycle, Edge auto-charges the subscriber and records the payment.

Dunning

The automatic retry process when a payment fails. Edge retries on a schedule before applying a grace period and eventual cancellation.

Proration

Adjusting the charge when a subscriber upgrades or downgrades mid-cycle, so they only pay the difference.

How It All Fits Together

Subscriptions share core Edge components with the rest of the billing system:

  • Billable items (recurring type) supply the line items in each plan.
  • Billing customers store the payment method used for auto-charging.
  • Revenue records every subscription payment.
  • Subscriptions differ from recurring invoices — subscriptions auto-charge, while recurring invoices send a Pay Now link for manual payment.
